All it takes is sleeping in a funny position, reaching too far or bending over at the wrong angle and you can be out of commission for the whole day or longer. This turned into a bit of a whirlwind tour of the neck and shoulder- I plan to get a deeper look at these neck muscles in the near future. They connect the upper two ribs to the spine at C2-C7. The Scalenes act as tension lines that stabilize the neck and assist in rib elevation. Omohyoid is another anterior neck muscle, connecting the hyiod bone to the scapula. ![]() It reaches up to the corners of the mouth and is involved in facial expressions (frowning in particular). The most superficial muscle in the anterior neck is the Platysma, a thin sheet that spans the neck from lateral jaw line to the clavicle. These muscles rotate and stabilize the shoulder blades with adduction (bringing them together). Rhomboideus Major and Minor also connect to the nuchal ligament, the spine at C7-T5, and the medial margin of the scapula. Serratus posterior superior connects the nuchal ligament to the 2nd -5th ribs and helps elevate the rib cage. It serves as an anchor point for a few of the muscles mentioned above. This thick band of connective tissue originates at the base of the skull and inserts at the lowest cervical vertebrae, C7. We can also see the Nuchal ligament, a critical structure in the neck. The theracane also does a really good job of trigger point and muscle stripping too. I find this particularly useful at improving range of motion and restoring flexibility. Tension levels were on the rise so I grabbed the theracane and performed about 5 minutes of "pin & stretch" mobility work. I ended up completing the workout with an additional 60 cals on the assault bike instead of finishing the ski erg.Īs soon as I completed the workout, my attention was drawn to my neck. 5 cals into the ski and I hopped off the machine, each pull made my neck and head feel *bad*. Things felt pretty good all the way up to the final set. ![]() Mild as it was, it still made me a little nervous so I proceeded with caution. It was during a pull-up, a relatively comfortable movement that I perform just about every time I'm in the gym. It wasn’t actually as terrible as I expected, except that during the warm up I felt a slight muscle spasm in my neck. My trainer felt like it would be appropriate to have our class do the same workout, except instead of a team effort, we all did the volume individually. It was my mother’s 60th and her trainer had come up with a real doozie: Last Tuesday there was a “birthday workout” on the board at the gym when we walked in. ![]()
